ARTIST STATEMENT

My love of fabric and sewing began early. The treadle sewing machine was my childhood companion starting around the age of eight or nine. The Sunbonnet Sue sewn onto rice bag fabric was my first quilt block. My mother taught me that with a bit of thread, fabric and imagination, I could create anything. She defined the meaning of "possibility" by example and allowed me to practice making magic with threads and fabric.

Music, playing on rocky and sandy seashores, and the colorful vegetation and fragrant flowers of Hawaii significantly influenced my visual landscape. The need to celebrate the ideas of courage, love, acceptance, growth, hard work and gratitude were instilled in me by generous parents. These ideals and the memories of my childhood experiences live secretly in my heart and often come out to play on the surfaces of my fiber art.
